This Executive Position Paper represents my attempt to understand how decodable texts were used by six first grade teachers with their beginning readers. Data were collected through surveys, observations, and email interviews. The paper is divided into three chapters. Chapter one describes the research supporting the premise that the types of texts used with beginning readers can influence reading development. Chapter two illustrates my interactions with the six participating first grade teachers and explains the results of those interactions. Finally, based on the information presented in chapters one and two, in chapter three I offer five recommendations for improving the use of decodable texts in first grade reading instruction at Ourtown Elementary School.
